Making Sure Your Air Conditioner Is Ready For Summer

You may have noticed lately that the days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer, and that can only mean one thing: summer is almost upon us! Yes, the months of fun, sun and ice cream are right around the corner, so you better start getting ready now.

For many of us, this means counting down the days to your summer holiday, and dusting off your shorts and sunglasses. When it comes to your home, preparing for the summer means making sure that your HVAC unit is fully prepared to keep you cool no matter how hot it is outside.

Follow our tips for getting your air conditioner ready to make sure you don’t end up hot under the collar this summer:

Check your thermostat

It is a good idea to check your thermostat at the start of the season to make sure it is working properly. If your thermostat is off by even a few degrees, it will mean you have to run your HVAC unit more intensely, which will in turn cost you more money on your energy bills.

You could also consider upgrading to a programmable or even smart thermostat, as these are even more efficient and thus could save you even more money.

Check the condenser coils and coolant lines

The run up to summer is the perfect time to check the innards of your HVAC unit and to touch up any areas that need it. Check the coolant lines and pipes and touch up any parts that are looking frayed or tired with some foam insulation tape.

Additionally, check the outdoor component of your unit to make sure the condenser coils are clear of any leaves, dirt or debris that might have made its way in there during the colder months.

Make sure your filters are ready

One of the most important factors in making sure your HVAC runs as efficiently as possible is ensuring that the filter is clean and clear. In general, you should replace your filter at least every three months, but it is a good idea to check your filter at the start of summer to make sure it isn’t getting clogged up with dust, as this is when you’ll need a clear filter most.

Get your unit serviced

We’ve lost count of the number of times we’ve said that you should have your HVAC unit serviced by a professional at least once a year. This allows you to catch any potential problems before they spiral out of control, potentially saving you a lot of money and hassle in the long run.

If you haven’t gotten your unit serviced yet, this could be the perfect time to do it, as it gives you peace of mind that your unit is fully prepared to handle the summer months, where it will be working extra hard to make sure your home stays cool.
