You set the thermostat to cool, but the vents are pushing out room-temperature or warm air. On a humid Wyoming Valley afternoon, that’s a problem you want solved fast. Here are the most common reasons an AC blows warm air, and what you can do before you call.
Check the Thermostat Settings
First, make sure the system is set to cool and the fan is set to auto, not on. When the fan is set to on, it runs constantly, even when the system isn’t actively cooling, so you feel unconditioned air between cycles. Switching it to auto often clears up the confusion.
Change the Air Filter
A dirty filter restricts airflow, which can freeze the evaporator coil. A frozen coil can’t cool the air, and eventually you get warm air out of the vents. If your filter is filthy, replace it, turn the system off for a few hours to let any ice melt, then try again.
Look at the Outdoor Unit
Your outdoor condenser needs clear airflow and power to work. Make sure it isn’t buried in leaves, grass clippings, or debris, and check that its breaker hasn’t tripped. If the fan on top of the outdoor unit isn’t spinning while the system calls for cooling, something’s wrong and it’s time for service.
Low Refrigerant Is a Repair, Not a Refill
If your system is low on refrigerant, it can’t cool properly, and low refrigerant almost always means there’s a leak. Refrigerant isn’t consumed like fuel, so ‘topping it off’ without finding the leak is a temporary and costly band-aid.
