People use ‘boiler’ and ‘furnace’ like they mean the same thing, but they’re two different ways of heating a home. Plenty of older Wilkes-Barre and Wyoming Valley homes run on boilers, while many newer ones have furnaces. Knowing which you have, and how it works, helps you take care of it and make smart decisions when it’s time to repair or replace.
The Basic Difference
A furnace heats air and blows it through ducts to warm your home. It’s a forced-air system, and it shares those ducts with your central air conditioning. A boiler heats water and sends it, or the steam it produces, through pipes to radiators or baseboards around the house. Boilers are a hydronic system: they heat with water, not air.
How to Tell Which You Have
Look at how heat gets into your rooms. If you have vents blowing warm air, you’ve got a furnace. If you have radiators or baseboard heaters that get warm, you’ve got a boiler. Boilers are common in the older homes throughout the valley, and many of them are the steam or hot-water systems we repair and replace every winter.
Pros and Cons
Boilers deliver steady, even heat that many people find more comfortable, and they have fewer moving parts, so they often last longer. But they heat up more slowly and can’t share ductwork with AC. Furnaces heat quickly and pair with central air, but they move air, which can stir up dust and dry the air out. Neither is simply better. They’re different tools.
Can I Add Air Conditioning to a House with a Boiler?
Yes, and it is one of the most common questions we get in this valley. Because a boiler heats with water rather than air, there is no ductwork to share, so conventional central air would mean adding a duct system to a finished house. Most homeowners here go a different route: ductless mini-splits, which mount on the wall and need only a small opening for the refrigerant line. You keep the boiler heat you already like and add cooling room by room, without tearing up ceilings to run ducts.
Repair, Replace, or Switch?
If your boiler or furnace is aging or acting up, you don’t always have to replace it with the same type, but switching systems is a bigger project because it may mean adding ductwork or piping. Usually it makes sense to stick with what your home is built for.
