Heat pumps have gotten a lot more popular, and a lot better at handling cold weather. If you’re replacing a heating system in the Wyoming Valley, you might be weighing a heat pump against a traditional furnace. How Each One Works

A furnace burns fuel, usually gas or oil, to create heat, then blows that warm air through your ducts. A heat pump doesn’t create heat by burning anything. That means one heat pump can handle both heating and cooling, and in homes without ductwork a ductless mini-split does the same job room by room.

A heat pump can be very efficient to run because it moves heat instead of generating it, and it handles your cooling too, so you’re not buying separate systems. A furnace often has a lower upfront cost and puts out very warm air quickly on brutal days. The math depends on fuel prices, your home’s insulation, and any rebates available at the time.

Will a Heat Pump Work in an Older House Here?

Often yes, but the answer depends more on the house than on the equipment. A heat pump delivers heat at a lower air temperature than a furnace, steadily rather than in hot blasts, so it works best in a house that holds the heat it is given. In a well-insulated home with decent windows, that is comfortable and efficient. In a draughty century-old house with minimal insulation, a heat pump will run long and hard and still struggle on the worst nights. That is not a reason to rule it out, but it is a reason to talk about insulation first.
