Radiator Not Heating Up? Reading Your First Heat of the Season

Cold radiators, banging pipes and uneven rooms on the first cold morning. What each symptom means in an older Wyoming Valley home, and what needs a call.
The first genuinely cold morning shows up in the valley sometime in September, usually before anyone is ready for it. You push the thermostat up for the first time since March, wait, and then start walking the house with your hand out. The living room radiator is warm. The back bedroom is stone cold. Something upstairs is knocking.
A lot of the housing stock around Wilkes-Barre was built before 1940, which means a lot of people here heat with a boiler and radiators rather than a furnace and ducts. Those systems are durable and they hold heat beautifully. They also announce their problems in a language most homeowners were never taught to read. Here is a translation.
Why Is My Radiator Cold at the Top and Warm at the Bottom?
On a hot-water system, that is almost always trapped air. Water carries the heat, air does not, and air collects at the highest point of the radiator. The bottom stays warm because water still reaches it. The top goes cold because it is sitting in an air pocket.
This one is usually a homeowner fix. Find the small bleed valve at the top of the radiator on the end opposite the supply pipe, put a cup and a rag under it, and open it a quarter turn with a radiator key or a flathead. You will hear air hiss out. When water dribbles instead of hissing, close it. Work from the lowest floor upward, and check the boiler’s pressure gauge when you are done, because bleeding lets pressure out. Most residential hot-water boilers sit around 12 to 15 psi cold, but the label on your unit is the number that counts.
If you bleed a radiator and it is cold again in two weeks, stop bleeding it. Air that keeps coming back is being pulled in somewhere, and the leak is the actual problem.
Cold at the Bottom Instead
Flip the symptom and you flip the cause. Warm at the top, cold along the bottom, usually means sludge: rust and sediment that has settled out of the water over the decades and is now sitting in the bottom of the radiator where hot water should be. Bleeding does nothing for it. The radiator needs to be flushed, and if it is happening in several rooms at once, the system water itself is the issue.
On a steam system the same symptom means something different again. Steam radiators are not bled the way hot-water ones are. They have an air vent on the side that lets air out as steam pushes in, and when that vent clogs the steam never fills the radiator at all. A vent is a small part and a straightforward swap. The Banging Is Not Normal
Old systems tick and creak as the metal expands. That is fine. A sharp bang, the kind that makes you sit up in bed, is not.
On one-pipe steam, banging usually means condensed water is trapped in a pipe or radiator where steam is trying to move, and the two collide. Often the radiator has lost its pitch, so the condensate cannot drain back toward the supply valve. Sometimes a shim under the far legs fixes it. Sometimes the pipe run itself has sagged, and that is a real repair. Either way, water hammer beats up the pipe joints every time it happens, so it is worth chasing down rather than living with.
One Room That Never Gets Warm
Before assuming the worst, check the boring explanations. A supply valve painted shut sometime during the Carter administration. A couch pushed flat against the radiator. A decorative cover with no gap at the top for convection. Those are common and they are free to fix.
If the valve is open and the radiator is clear and it still runs cold while the rest of the house is fine, the room is not getting its share of the flow. Balancing a system that has had rooms added, pipes rerouted and radiators swapped over ninety years is a real skill, and it is one of the better arguments for having someone who works on these systems every winter look at yours.
When to Stop and Call
Some of this is homeowner territory. Some is not.
Shut it down and call if you see water pooling around the base of the boiler, if the pressure relief valve is discharging, or if you have to add water to the system repeatedly to keep pressure up. That last one means water is leaving somewhere, and in an old house it is often leaving inside a wall or under a floor. If the boiler fires and then shuts off again within a minute or two, over and over, do not just keep resetting it.
If you smell gas, leave that list behind. Get everyone out of the house, do not touch switches, and call the gas utility and 911 from outside.
Get It Looked At Before It Is Twenty Degrees
Late September and early October is the window. The system has just told you what is wrong with it, the weather is not yet forcing your hand, and nobody is competing for the appointment. By the time the first hard freeze arrives, every heating contractor in Luzerne County is working through a backlog, and a cold radiator becomes a much longer wait. Booking routine maintenance now is cheaper than an emergency later, and if there is standing water or a leak involved, our plumbing side handles that too.
